Taxi customized day tour is great way of exploring Mahabaleshwar. You can book and board taxi near ST Bus Stand. However, it is not required to book or board the taxi only at ST stand.
Most hotels provide facility to book taxi at Hotel along with pick-up and drop at hotel. No extra charges are applied if your hotel is nearby the ST stand.

Apart from daytrip, tourists can avail Taxi service for local ferrying from hotel to ST stand/Market (or vice versa). Taxis usually charge Rs. 100 for local ferrying within 2 km range from ST Bus Stand. Most of the hotels provide the facility to book the CAB at the hotel.

This is perhaps the best way of exploring Mahabaleshwar for tourists but yes it is more expensive than other options.
